Three AK-47s found in Yala

Rangers in the deep South yesterday found three AK-47s and a quantity of ammunition in a jungle in Yala province that are believed to belong to a well-known militant group in the region.

Security forces went to Ban Atakuwah in Raman district in the early hours of yesterday after being tipped off that militants had hidden weapons in the jungle in preparation for more attacks.

A group under the command of well-known militant Abdullahing Asong is active in the area, an official said.

The recovery of the weapons is part of the ongoing operation to tackle militants in the Muslim region, which saw two more killings over the weekend.

A teenager in Narathiwat's Yi-ngor district was hacked to death while returning home from a teashop at about 10pm on Saturday. Abdullahda Ara, 15, was riding his motorcycle home when he was attacked by people hiding in the bushes along the road. He received wounds to the head and back and died in hospital.

Yesterday, a policeman was shot dead at a football stadium in Pattani's Sai Buri district. Pol Sergeant Werachok Chailarp, 36, was shot twice in the head and died on the spot.
