Vasana accused of lese-majeste

A retired military officer from Phitsanulok yesterday filed a police complaint accusing Election Commission chairman Vasana Puemlarp of lese-majeste.

Captain Songklod Chuenchoophol said Vasana had contradicted the statement of His Majesty the King televised on April 25.

Vasana was reported in the press as saying on May 4 that he thought the one-horse race in the April 2 election had been democratic, said Songklod, claiming that this was offensive to the monarch, who had called it undemocratic.

Phitsanulok's Muang police station has jurisdiction over the case.

Last week a group of Songkhla residents lodged a similar complaint at the Hat Yai police station. Police have yet to decide whether to launch criminal proceedings against Vasana.
