Artefacts unearthed

Two Buddha statues and other artefacts that are believed to date back more than 900 years were unearthed yesterday in a paddy field in Phu Khieo district.
The sandstone Buddha statues, 72 centimetres high and 50cm wide, were found by Pramual Kaewnan when he was levelling his paddy field in preparation for the coming planting.Besides the two Buddha statues, which according to a local official from the Fine Arts Department are in Khmer style, other artefacts including broken bowls and bronze bells were found. Benjaporn Sasuprom, from the Fine Arts Department, said the youngest artefacts in the find were at least 700 years old, while the oldest probably dated back at least 900 years. She said the artefacts were of a similar style to those found recently in Nakhon Ratchasima and that they might be linked. The villagers believe their community might be on the site of an ancient city and that the statues and other artefacts should be kept in their community. Boonreung Chaimala, chairman of Olo Tambon Administrative Organisation (TAO), said the TAO would allocate a budget to preserve them and that a centre for local historical studies might be developed.
