[BASKETBALL] Last minute's three-pointer from Surachet Pongsiri kept Hi-Tech crowned their title for second consecutive year in a dramatic victory over Tiew Pai Ngarm at the final of the King's Cup Division A Basketball Championships yesterday.
Their triumph yesterday not only gave them the national trophy but they could avenge their loss to Tiew Pai Ngarm in the opening match. Hi-Tech's Boonchuay Phopak scored a three-pointer to open the game and it was an only one time that his team took a lead throughout the half time. Then the champions played better and Piyapong Piroon added two points to open up the a 43-42 lead in the third quarter but Tiew Pai Ngarm fought back and ran away Hi-Tech again. Trailing only one point at 56-57 with 10 seconds remaining in the last quarter, Surachet, the shortest team member of Hi-tech with only 165-cm tall, received the ball from his team-mate in the turnover then suddenly shocked Tiew Pai Ngarm with a three-pointer in the last second, beating them 59-57. Parinya Jintanasathit sank 20 points to be the Hi-Tech's top scorer. "We won this match with a luck and spirit because we wish to contribute the triumph to one handful player of the team, who sustained the knee injury," said Manit Niyomyindee, the Hi-Tech's coach. In the men's third place playoff, trailing three points in the overtime, Sorranat Sirichumchai could not make the Bangkok Bank's dream come true as he missed his three-pointer penalty foul that allowed the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) edged past the Bankers 67-65. Meanwhile, the Bangkok Bank A landed their win over the Rattana Bundit University 91-68 to dominate the trophy for the consecutive 14 times in the women's category. The Bangkok Bank B defeated Wat Noi Nopphakhun Parents and Teachers Association to take the women's third place.
