Thai students receive honours at Intel's global science competition

Four Thai students have won preliminary awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which has 1,190 projects from 47 countries in competition.
Four of the five Thai students in the competition won three special awards, Dr Sawat Tantiphanwade, deputy director of the Technology Management Centre, said yesterday. The centre is supporting the five Thai students - a team of three and two individuals - at the annual competition in Indianapolis, Indiana.Nat Piyapramote, 17, of Ratchaburi's Sarasit Phithayalai School, won two awards, one from the Association for Computing Machinery and another from the American Association for Artificial Intelligence. His project is called "Statistical-based Adaptive Binarisation for Document Imaging". The other award went to the group entry. Pirachula Chulanon, 14, Chitsachee Sichanugrist, 14, and Takphet Lekavijit, 15, of Bangkok's Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni) School received an award from United Technologies Corporation for their project "Novel, bioabsorbent 'Ya-Plong' for Oil Spill Removal". Nat and the group from Bangkok received support from the Technology Management Centre, its parent agency the National Science and Technology Development Agency, and Intel.
