Unshackled Samak pours scorn on PAD

After a long period of silence, Bangkok Senator Samak Sundaravej has spoken out against the People's Alliance for Democracy's latest criticism of Thaksin Shinawatra and the Election Commission (EC).
After reporting to the Parliament as a newly elected senator, Samak said he wanted to know what crime it was the EC had committed that was so serious it required their resignation. He said other groups who were far more deserving of the kind of pressure the EC is currently under are consistently overlooked. "Who else has more power than the court? The court has not ordered the election commissioners to resign, but the People's Alliance for Democracy are demanding the commissioner's resignation and prohibiting Thaksin Shinawatra from re-entering Thai politics," Samak said. He said the media were partly responsible for aggravating the situation by only reporting the anti-government side of the story to the public and failing to investigate the whole picture. "I have not been able to speak for three months, but I have to speak out today as people are provoking each other in every part of society," he said. "I want to ask those calling on the EC to resign whose parents will be in trouble if they don't resign?" Besides being a political veteran, Samak formerly hosted a number of television and radio programmes. He eventually quit his role as a TV host because of pressure from the public after lashing out at two members of the Privy Council for "acting inappropriately" by indirectly supporting the growing political pressure against Thaksin in February. While running for the Senate he was also required by law to avoid all appearances in the media.
