Family of injured boy agrees to ministry deal

The parents of a six-year-old boy who suffered atrophied limbs and brain damage after a dental procedure went horribly wrong in March 2003, have accepted the Public Health Ministry's offer of an out-of-court settlement of Bt4 million in compensation.
The parents of Chanayuth "Nong Tao" Patangthane - Chaiya Patangthane and Tiwakarn Onyai - met with ministry representatives on Tuesday to discuss the offer of Bt4 million plus life-long physical rehabilitation services for the boy. Chaiya told reporters yesterday he was contacted again by officials to confirm the offer, which he accepted. "Besides the compensation funds, the life-long rehabilitation services at Sirind-horn National Medical Rehabi-litation Centre for Nong Tao convinced me to accept the offer," he said. Deputy Health Minister Anuthin Charnveerakul said yesterday he had not been officially informed about the results of Tuesday's meeting, but if the family agreed, he would get legal advisers to secure the agreement and call a meeting of related officials next week. Anuthin's offer of Bt4 million in compensation, rehabilitation and jobs for Nong Tao's parents came after Anuthin resisted an order by Nonthaburi Provincial Court to pay some Bt4.7 million in damages and sought to "bargain" the amount down.
