TRT lawmakers 'to forego' compensation

Thai Rak Thai MPs said yesterday they would not seek financial compensation for the April 2 poll, which was annulled on Monday by the country's top court.
Their comment follows the Constitution Court ruling for a new ballot to be held - which all political parties now say they will contest, although a date has yet to be determined. Last week, Thai Rak Thai MPs questioned if they would be compensated for their campaign budgets if a fresh poll was called. However, after the court verdict, the MPs appeared to have changed their mind. They said they were not concerned about the money "wasted" on the last election and would not sue, as they did not want to be a hindrance. Thai Rak Thai MPs had to pay Bt10,000 to register as a candidate and spent about Bt1.5 million per person on campaigning for the April 2 ballot. A major share of MPs' campaign funds is understood to have come from the party leader and MPs were reportedly told at a Thai Rak Thai meeting yesterday that faction leaders would reimburse "the other half" of funds each spent on the election. Wang Nam Yom faction member Pracha Prasopdee, said he was prepared to contest a new election even though he would have to invest money again. "I've no problem with that, and believe others will not have a problem either," he said. However, he suggested that courts might like to at least consider that MPs had spent money in the previous election in order to come up with a remedy, he said. Poh Mod Dam faction member Chalermchai Urangkoon, said he did not have any concerns about outlaying money for a new election. Because no-one was willing to take responsibility for funds spent in the previous ballot, it would be hard to take the complaint to court, he said.
