Suthep takes legal action again EC

Suthep Thaugsuban, the Democrat Party secretary-general, will today sue Election Commission chairman Vasana Puemlarp and the three other EC members for alleged malfeasance over their handling of the April 2 general elections.
The veteran politician said yesterday he would take the legal action on his own, and not on behalf of the Democrat Party. He said he would this afternoon have his lawyers file a lawsuit with the Criminal Court against the four election commissioners. Suthep said it appeared the commis?sioners failed to perform their duties fair?ly to all the parties concerned. He said the EC responded unfairly to allegations that smaller political parties were hired to contest the election to help candidates from the ruling Thai Rak Thai Party avoid the requirement that they win at least 20 per cent of votes in case they run unop?posed. Suthep earlier accused certain senior TRT figures of involvement with the scheme. "I want to see the election commis?sioners go. I don't want to see unfair elec?tions," Suthep said. Meanwhile, Thai Rak Thai spokesman Jatuporn Phrompan yesterday called on Vasana to "tell all" about his reported remark made recently before the Constitution Court that an unnamed "old and large political party" hired smaller political parties not to contest the April 2 election. Suthep yesterday said he believed the party in question referred to the Democrats. "Vasana should tell it all. Bad people and political parties should not be allowed in society," Jatuporn said during a press briefing at the TRT head office. "It's the Democrat Party which has resorted to dirty tricks," he said.
