Health Ministry bargain for lesser compensation

The Public Health Ministry is trying to bargain with a family of a six year old boy who was awarded damages of Bt4.7 million in damages after a dental procedure went horribly wrong, leaving him mentally and physically disabled.
Deputy Public Health Minister Anutin Charnveerakul said on Monday Bt4 million was as good as the family was going to get from the ministry without going back to court. He said: "If the parents refuse to take the offer, we will have to go to court instead of settling the case once and for all." He added that if the parents took the offer, his ministry would be willing to take care of the boy, Chanayuth Patangthane, and would consider hiring his parents as permanent employees. Earlier this year, the Nonthaburi Provincial Court ordered the Public Health Ministry to pay Bt3.4 million to Chanayuth and Bt1.07 million to his mother Tiwakarn Onyai because of the procedure that left the boy with brain damage and wasted limbs. The boy went into severe shock and developed problems after a dentist at a state hospital in Nakhon Sawan did some work on the boy's teeth. The child was only three years old. The court said an annual interest rate of 7.5 per cent a year should also apply to the compensation figure. Tiwakarn yesterday rejected Anutin's offer and vowed to fight him to the end. "I don't know why he has tried to negotiate a lower amount of compensation. I am not going to ask for the interest. I just want the ministry to pay what the court ordered it to pay," she said.
