STATE OF THE ARTS
Rough and ready

Ohm Phanphiroj showcases a series of photographs in "Rare Views" at Eat Me Art Restaurant.
The show coincides with the 35-year-old artist's recently published books "Rare Views" and "Rough Stuff" and features 15 seductive colour images of male models working in the US fashion industry. Ohm's works capture provocative and intimate scenes that allow the viewer to become a voyeur and question the relationship between the artist and the models. The show runs through June 25. The restaurant-cum-gallery is on Soi Phipat II off Convent Road and is open daily from 3pm to 1am. Call (02) 238 0931.
Abstract discovery
Fasang Nava-aran explores geometric interplay and strata in "Found", an exhibition opening at H Gallery on June 24. The artist's surfaces breathe through the tactile build-up of thick latex mixed-oil with amalgamated materials such as sand, sawdust and clay. Torn fragments of clothing are also submerged into the dominant monotone colour giving the works an oily, terrestrial veneer. The gallery is at 201 Sathorn Road Soi 12 and is open Thursday to Saturday from noon to 6pm. Call (01) 310 4428 or visit www.hgallerybkk.com.
'Exquisite drama'
Timothy Yarger Fine Art Bangkok opens its first photography exhibition on May 30, displaying the work of American Rodney Smith. Smith demonstrates a strong sense of nostalgia and romance in his work, transporting the viewer to "places of exquisite drama, atmosphere and narrative". The exhibition, which continues through July 15, contains more than 30 photographs, most in black and white. The gallery, on the ground floor of Promenade Decor on Wireless Road, is open Monday to Saturday from 11am to 6pm. Call (02) 655 0882.

Women of the East
Following the success of her 2004 show "Kimino", Elly Roolant-Kostense focuses the spotlight on Indian women with her second exhibition show "Sari", which runs at Budji Living Bangkok from May 19 to August 19. The beauty, mystique and allure of rural Indian women are explored alongside their strengths and the hardships they endure in their daily lives. Her 20 oil paintings examine the emotional contradiction between having to be strong to survive and at the same time having to be submissive and subservient due to the constraints imposed by society. Budji Living Bangkok is in Soi Thonglor 25 (Sukhumvit 55) and is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm. Call (02) 712 9832-33 or visit www.budjibangkok.com.
