Morality will end problems: Prawase

To end the political crisis, society must be restructured to boost public participation in government, strengthen communities and uphold moral integrity, social critic Prawase Wasi said yesterday.
The country must learn from the current political troubles and realise its form of democracy - where MPs are representatives of interest groups - has failed miserably, he told a seminar at a Bangkok hotel."Thais therefore must opt for a democratic system where the public can participate in the formulation of social and economic policies and have the right to examine the workings of government at every level," he said. "Fake democracy is a ruling system that lacks dharma [Buddhist truth] and morality and will lead to bloodshed," he said. A poor education system has destroyed society's morality, Prawase said. "The type of education that values knowledge but not morality has made people weak. Instilling moral integrity into a society that lacks any morality is impossible," he said. While society remains hierarchical, it will be plagued by inequalities, Prawase said. "In a vertically structured society, only people at the top can see the sky while people on the lower tiers can see only the feet of others. A well-structured society must allow everyone to see the sky. Society must have reconciliation," he said. Eliminating inequalities would strengthen the democratic foundations. "If people get together, they are united and strong and only then can they stop evil in society," he said.
