Democrats gear up for fresh polls, name leaders for all regions

The Democrat Party has nominated key leaders for each region on the assumption there will be a fresh general election soon.
Former party leader Banyat Bantadtan, who presided over the meeting, said that after analysing the present political situation, the Democrat leadership saw the possibility of a fresh election. The party has started to marshal its resources for the ballot, he said. Deputy secretary-general Sukhumbhand Paribatra and former MP Theptai Senpong, would both be responsible for Bangkok constituency, while party deputy leader Chaiwut Bannawat, Paitoon Kaewthong and Terdpong Chaiyanant will be responsible for the North. Witoon Nambutr and Nipon Prompa have been assigned responsibility for the Northeast, Trairong Suwankhiri for the South and deputy leader Alongkorn Pollabutr for the Central region. As part of its campaign to reach out to the masses, the party has also scheduled its People's Assembly for a second time in Ratchaburi province on Sunday. Banyat said the party expected about 500 people to attend the assembly, which would be presided over by party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva. "The People's Assembly is our latest tool in reaching out to the public and enabling them to understand our policies," he said."A lot of people are taking an interest. We think this is right way to go," he said. Yosawadee Hongthong The Nation
