Eerie excitement

AXN's new drama series 'Supernatural' takes viewers on a mysterious, adventurous ride across America
When their mother, Mary, was taken 20 years ago by unseen evil forces, the brothers' father John embarked on a mission against the supernatural to avenge his wife's death. Bringing the two young boys with him on his missions, John brought them up to hunt and fight the unexplained - whether they wanted it or not. A silken blend of action, drama, mystery with a dash of science fiction, "Supernatural" is a tale of two brothers, bound by destiny to battle the evil forces of the paranormal. Poles apart, the Winchester brothers are compelled to travel around the US to hunt out the eerie creatures of urban legends and folklore that you thought were all just made-up. Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki who played Dean Forester in the TV series "Gilmore Girls") is the younger brother - the "normal" one. A law student trying to escape the eccentric lifestyle his father has mapped out, Sam gladly trades in his ghost-hunting lifestyle for college and a perfect girlfriend. He hasn't been in touch with his brother Dean (Jensen Ackles from "Smallville") for four years. However, things change when Dean suddenly turns up on Sam's doorstep to announce that their father too has vanished and he has little choice but to join Dean in search for their father. Padalecki and Ackles talk about their roles in "Supernatural" which premieres today on AXN (UBC 19) at 10pm.
How is your character as Sam different from Dean? Padalecki: Sam is not like Dean who is very much into hunting this thing that killed his mother because he knew his mother. Sam never had a relationship with his mother but that doesn't mean he didn't love her but there is just a void there. He doesn't know who his mother was so he doesn't feel anything for her. He doesn't understand why he is being forced to live this life where every few months he has to move to a new town, to a new school, make new friends. In actual fact, he just wants to live a safe life and not go hunting for these freaky ghosts or poltergeists or whatever they may come into contact with. Sam is all about going to school, having his girlfriend who he loves and starting a family one day and dreams of being a lawyer.
And Dean from Sam? Ackles: He's kind of the cocky misfit who has taken on the role that his dad wanted him to take on, whereas Sam the younger brother is a little bit more rebellious and has taken a different route. So Sam is sort of a rebel in the normal society sense, kind of a "Mad Max" in a way. He drives an Impala with a bunch of weapons in the trunk, has a bunch of shallow relationships with women. It's fantastic, it's great.
How did you prepare for your role? Padalecki: To prepare for this role I did some studies about urban legends, poltergeists, the devil's gate and phenomenon that exist around the [US]. I also did research on the Internet and books. Ackles: I was originally going to play the younger brother. They only decided to switch my role over to Dean at the last minute. I actually like it as he is actually more of a comedic written role, cocky, slapstick kind of stuff. I like it; I think its fun to play. In preparing for it, I gave Dean a very weathered, experienced, travelled kind of look because he has been doing it for many years, hunting ghosts and goblins for many years.
What do you think will attract audiences to "Supernatural"? Padalecki: I think what worked well for the script is what takes place… all sorts of extraordinary circumstances and things that people don't normally deal with. It also revolves around these two brothers who will ultimately do anything for each other, building their relationship with each other. You just want to see them be brothers and be there for each other. I think what will draw people to "Supernatural" is the story of the two brothers because even though they are in extraordinary circumstances that people don't normally deal with every day, they love each other and you'll want to see them go through everything with each other. It's very action packed and fun filled, funny with great drama as well. The show is very Americana with a supernatural twist. We're searching for my father and the thing that killed my mother so we're not just going to be in Hollywood, Los Angeles or California. It's going to take us to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, north to Washington and way east to New York. You're going to get a feel of America and we're going to travel across the country so you'll get to see the roads, towns, streets and the different peoples all around America. It's going to be a very fun show to watch. "Supernatural" is scary, "Supernatural" is funny. It has a bit of everything. Ultimately it's a very edge-of-the-seat pilot but you'll also care for the brothers who are funny and crazy at times. Ackles: It's got a lot of suspense and two brothers who share a really tight relationship and are very relatable to a lot of people. You also have two ghost hunters and that is something you don't get to see every day.
