Foreign orders for Thai sugar

Despite a continuing shortage on the domestic front, demand for sugar remains strong overseas, a spokesman for local exporters said yesterday.
Companies from Asia and Europe are set to buy about 100,000 tonnes of Thai sugar, he said, due to its relatively low price on the world market. The government strictly controls the price of sugar in the market, which has led some traders to illegally ship overseas. But even legitimate exports are priced lower than world market prices. The Commerce Ministry said the price on the international market is Bt25-Bt35 per kg, while the retail price in the Kingdom is just Bt17.50 per kg.
