Chavalit to quit poverty centre

A source revealed yesterday that former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh is to resign as chairman of the Poverty Eradication Command Centre.

He was appointed by Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and asked to get to grips with poverty. The source said Chavalit would leave the position but had made preparations to enable the next government to carry on his work.

Acting Prime Minister Chidchai Vanasatidya said he had seen no resignation letter from Chavalit, adding he did not believe the former premier would leave a job he loved.

Chavalit last week suggested a "neutral" should be appointed as interim prime minister to resolve the political crisis.
