Five leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) surrendered yesterday to the Crime Suppression Division, vowing to fight charges related to their anti-government rallies of recent months.
Chamlong Srimuang, Sondhi Limthongkul, Somsak Kosaisuk, Somkiate Pongpaibul and Pipop Thongchai presented themselves at CSD headquarters at 8.30am and said the protests would not stop. Police commandos outnumbered the 100 or so PAD supporters who turned out for the surrender. They were prevented from entering the building. As the five emerged from giving testimony, however, their supporters erupted in cheers, shouting "PAD fight on" and "Thaksin get out". Police yesterday issued their second summons in a month for the five, after Chalard Worachat filed a case against them for allegedly attempting to topple democracy. They did not report to police on Friday, allowing the deadline for the first warrant to pass. Adamant their actions were warranted, the five PAD leaders immediately called a press conference after proceedings, where Somsak said: "All we did was in order to solve the country's problems." Another rally is planned for today at Sanam Luang, said Sondhi. The leaders said they did not fear the charges against them, because they had faith in the courts. They said if there was trouble at today's rally, it would be the government's doing, not theirs. PAD lawyer Suwat Apaipakdi said fresh charges were levelled against his clients yesterday. Previously they had been charged with attempting to undermine the Constitution. But the PAD leaders denied all charges and said they would offer their testimony only in court. They will also level charges against Chalard, they said. They must report to police again on Monday.
