'Austrian firm pressured BMA'

A Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) executive yesterday accused Austrian firm Steyr Daimler Puch of providing faulty information that led Governor Apirak Kosayodhin to open a letter of credit, putting into effect the scandal-plagued deal to procure the firm's fire-trucks and boats.
Deputy Governor Wallop Suwandee said that after taking office Apirak ordered an inquiry into details of the deal and had consulted many times with the company's representatives and Austrian diplomats. On none of these occasions was the BMA told it was within its rights to cancel the deal, Wallop said. In fact, Steyr Daimler Puch urged the BMA to open the line of credit, saying failing to do so would adversely affect Thai-Austrian relations and that the BMA would be responsible for any resulting damages, he said.
