Railway worker, 21, shot dead

A man was killed in a drive-by shooting by suspected Islamic militants in the deep South yesterday, while officials insisted that rising oil prices will not affect their job of providing security.
Railway worker Samueree Lue-ngi, 21, was shot dead in Sungai Padi district of Narathiwat early yesterday while riding a motorbike to visit a friend. Two gunmen on a motorbike fired three rounds from an 11mm pistol before speeding away. The bullets hit Samueree in the face, chest and stomach. He died at the scene. Meanwhile, Spokesperson for the Southern Border Province Peace-building Command Colonel Somkhuan Saengpataranet, insisted that rising oil prices will not affect the work of security forces in the three southernmost provinces.
