'Novelty' party to get serious

After setting out to poke fun at Thai politicians, the leadership of the Khonkhoplodnee Party (KPNP) were trying desperately yesterday to re-invent themselves and help form a coalition government with the party chief as prime minister.
With only four elected candidates, who are yet to be certified as MPs, together with five other non-government election winners, KPNP (People's Party for Debt Forgiveness) leader Chuchart Prathandhama announced a plan to mobilise enough MPs to form the next government with himself in charge. The Election Commission (EC) has yet to confirm the MPs. Chuchart told KPNP party members yesterday he did not run as a candidate because he thought the poll was meaningless and that MP status would not last long. It was not clear if Chuchart was banking on the hope that the EC would not be too stringent in its interpretation of the law as a prime minister must be an elected MP. He also announced his plan to change the party name to Tai Pen Tai (meaning Tai is Tai).
