Chavalit wants end to division

Former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh will hold a press conference tomorrow to call on Thais to end their conflict and quarrelling before the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne in June, a source said.

On Monday, Chavalit met Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda to seek his advice on how to end the political wrangling, Lt-General Chawengsak Thong-salauy, a close aide of Chavalit, said.

"General Chavalit has followed the political situation closely and has found that Thais are divided clearly into two sides, between North and South. If the situation continues, damage will be done to the country. The country has never before experienced such a rift,'' he said.

Chawengsak said Chavalit was speaking out because the deadline is near for Parliament to convene.
