Bt30m libel case chucked out

The Criminal Court yesterday threw out a Bt30-million libel lawsuit, saying there was no cause for columnist Wanich Jarungidanan to sue Matichon newspaper, for which he worked.

Wanich initiated action against the newspaper and two of its editors, Pichien Kurathong and Suwapong Janfangphet, accusing them of tarnishing his reputation by portraying him as a front man for GMM Grammy Group when it attempted to take the newspaper over last year.

He cited Pichien's article "Real friend, phoney friend" as evidence, saying it was a thinly veiled attack on him.

In its verdict, the court said Pichien used many Thai and Buddhist proverbs to describe his feelings about Wanich's possible involvement in the take-over bid but had not defamed him.
