Senate losers eye suspension

Failed Senate candidates yesterday demanded the Chiang Mai Provincial Election Commission suspend the endorsement of winning candidates on the grounds that the election on April 19 was marred by irregularities.
A total of 15 candidates said they would today submit their complaints with the agency demanding it suspend the announcement of the Senate election results. They urged the commission to take action against those who broke electoral law, hold a new election and pay Bt3 million in compensation to each candidate who did not break electoral law. Charinrat Puthpuan, a senatorial candidate said many different forms of vote-buying - including free trips, parties and cash - marred the election. Threats were also used to gain votes, Charinrat said. Candidate Chitnupong Pukkam said his group would give the EC seven days to investigate the complaints before taking further action. "We are making the move not because we lost the election, but because senators should have moral integrity ,'' he said. - The Nation
