Maverick politician Chalerm Yoobamrung has risen from the political ashes with a new party, leaving his defunct Muanchon Party behind him.
Last week he registered the New Alternative Party to run in the next general election. Chalerm said the Election Commission endorsed his party and he changed the name from Muanchon to the New Alternative Party to simplify the registration process. He also changed the logo and added fresh policies, with drug suppression being at the top of the list. "I am neither an ally or enemy of anyone, but I am an enemy of evil," the controversial politician said. "Many people are scared to enter politics and some [members] of the government are scared of being harassed,'' he added. His next step is to hold a party meeting to start the process of choosing a leader and an executive board. Chalerm does not want to lead the party and hopes to find someone knowledgeable in economics to take the helm, he said. The new party will oppose Thai Rak Thai policies, including what he sees as unfair loan projects, Chalerm said. The party will also campaign to scrap offers of delays in repaying debts, which he claims increase indebtedness. "We would not have a Bt30 medical scheme but instead give free medical treatment to the poor and make only the rich pay," he said He will start his political campaigning by listening to what voters wants and then present his policies to them. The party will open a website to gather opinions and expose the inadequacies of the current government. Chalerm vowed that the party would have a strong structure and not give excessive power to any individual.
