Thai Rak Thai seeks court ruling

The Thai Rak Thai Party is turning to the Constitution Court to determine whether it can legally form the government, one of the party's legal experts said yesterday.

Wichit Plungsrisakul said the party would ask the court to rule whether Parliament could be convened without the full quota of 500 MPs. To abide by the Constitution Parliament must be convened by May 1.

"Our MPs already certified by the Election Commission will petition the acting Parliament President, Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua, on Monday," Wichit said.

According to Article 159 of the Constitution, Parliament must convene its first session within 30 days of an election. Another TRT member, Sukhumpong Ngoon-kham, said he believed the court would accept the petition because it was sure the EC could not fill all 500 seats before the deadline and he hoped the court could make a final decision before May 1.
