EC to probe Senate poll irregularity

The Election Commission (EC) will investigate allegations that candidates in the recent Senate election - including some senators-elect - violated the election law by soliciting votes during anti-Thaksin rallies, a commissioner said yesterday.
Prinya Nakchudtree said the EC had received many complaints in recent days about candidates breaking the law. "So far, there is evidence of around 100 candidates taking to rally stages around the country," he said. Prinya said the EC would appoint ad-hoc committees to examine the cases. Under electoral law, senatorial candidates are banned from campaigning. The Thai Rak Thai Party on Thursday called for the disqualification of three senators-elect from Bangkok on the grounds they solicited votes during the recent anti-Thaksin rallies. The three are Nitipoom Nawarat, Klanarong Chantik and Rosana Tositrakul. In his defence, Klanarong said he had never spoken on stage at any anti-Thaksin rally held by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD). "I only attended the rallies and listened to the speeches of PAD leaders," he said.
