HM the King wins UN award
His Majesty the King has won this year's United Nations Development Programme Award for his decades-long dedication to the country's development through royal works and many royally initiated projects.
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has requested an audience with the King to present the award, Government Spokesman Surapong Suebwong-lee said yesterday. He said Annan would visit Thailand between May 25 and May 27. The King is the world's longest-reigning monarch and the country is now preparing to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the King's reign. Central to the King's approach to rural development is the desire for the rural community to be self-supporting. His philosophy of "Sufficiency Economy" has inspired much of the international community, including the UN agencies, especially in the aftermath of the 1997 economic crisis.
