Battered barcode to beat a retreat

With the belief that in the not distant future RFID will play an important role in retailing as it gradually replaces the 20-year-old barcode system, Big C Supercentre plans to implement RFID in its operations.
Prawet Prungtangkij, vice president of Big C Supercentre, said RFID technology will be the key factor in future retailing. It is expected to drive the flow of products, services and transport. Big C plans to use RFID to manage data flowing through its 45 outlets nationwide within the next three years. It has more than 100,000 product items in each location. Under the RFID deployment plan, Prawet said RFID will come to Big C into two steps. First is to deploy RFID in its supply chain systems including the inventory system and distribution centres, and the other is to deploy RFID on the shelf. "RFID is now more expensive than the barcode, but in the long run RFID will be more efficient when deployed in entire supply-chain systems," said Prawet. Asina Pornwasin, The Nation
