Manus to train in Cuba

[AMATEUR BOXING] Athens Olympic gold medallist Manus Boonjamnong will fly to Cuba in October for training sessions with former national head coach Juan Fontanil in preparation for the next Asian Games.
General Thaweep Chantraroj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (Abat), yesterday announced the national squad's plans for the 15th Asian Games in Qatar in December. Abat will call all short-listed boxers to training camp on May 1 before announcing the final squad three months later. "After calling the boxers to the camp on May 1, we will send them to box in a tournament in Europe. Then we will announce the 15th Asian Games squad on August 1," said Thaweep. "The team will be sent to train in Europe again for three weeks, then they will be moved to Cuba and Syria or Lebanon. We plan to arrive in Doha in late November to adapt to the conditions before the Games start in December." Where the team's stars were concerned, especially Manus and Worapoj Phetkum, Thaweep said nobody would receive privileged treatment and everybody would train in the same programmes. "Only the best men will be called to the national squad, so no one will have any privilege. "But in Manus' case, we will send him to Cuba alone to train with Juan [Fontanil], who will get him back to form in a short period of time." Thaweep said that Abat's gold-medal hopes rested with light flyweight Suban Pannon, flyweight Somjit Jongjohor, lightweight Pichai Sayotha and Suriya Prasathinphimai in the middleweight class, as well as with Manus and Worapoj.
