Cloud-seeding fleet grounded

The three remaining planes used in cloud-seeding operations have been grounded for safety reasons pending an investigation after one aircraft of the same model crashed last month.

It will take three weeks to determine whether the three Pilatus Porter PC6's can return to seeding operations.

Agriculture Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said yesterday all nine aircraft in the cloud-seeding fleet had been grounded for technical reasons. They would be repaired and installed with internal radar as suggested by His Majesty the King. Sudarat said the plane crashed just after takeoff from a base in Chanthaburi province because of mechanical failure.
