Yaowapa 'too rich'

Democrat Party deputy leader Alongkorn Pollabutr yesterday accused former Chiang Mai MP Yaowapa Wongsawat of being unusually rich and making a false asset declaration.

Yaowapa, a sister of caretaker PM Thaksin Shinawatra, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Alongkorn is already facing defamation lawsuits by Yaowaret Shinawatra, another sister of Thaksin, over corruption allegations against her.

The Democrat said that before assuming the post of MP and PM's adviser, Yaowapa transferred assets to her three children worth Bt1 billion. However, the annual report of M Link Asia Corp Plc, the Wongsawat family's main business, showed losses of Bt123 million.

Alongkorn said Yaowapa's daughter Chinnicha bought shares in listed companies worth more than Bt1 billion in March.

"Where did the Wongsawat family get the money to buy shares of over Bt1 billion when the salaries of MPs and the permanent secretary are not enough for that, and especially when the main company of the family faced loses?" Alongkorn asked.
