Klaew to be cremated

Caretaker Deputy Agriculture Minister Adisorn Piengket takes part in the bathing rite for the late senator Klaew Norapati at a Khon Kaen temple yesterday.
A royally sponsored cremation for Klaew Norapati, 88, who was the country's oldest parliamentarian, will take place at Nongwaeng Temple in Khon Kaen's Muang district on Wednesday.

Klaew died of old age on Saturday.

Before he started his political career, Klaew made his name as a lawyer fighting court battles for poor clients. With a bachelor's degree in political science from Thammasat University, he entered national politics and was elected as a Khon Kaen MP in 1952.

He served several terms as an MP and in 1996 was among the drafters of the Constitution.

Klaew had just completed his six-year term as a Khon Kaen senator, making him a member of the first Upper House to be elected.
