Outgoing Chiang Mai Senator Intarat Yodbangtoey yesterday offered an apology to the Democrat Party on behalf of all senators from the northern city about "the uncivilised behaviour" of some residents at a Democrat rally last month.
"Although the attackers were Chiang Mai people, they were just a minority group. Other residents do not support this uncivilised behaviour," the senator said. There are five Chiang Mai senators. On March 30, scores of Chiang Mai residents - believed to be supporters of the Thai Rak Thai Party - staged a noisy protest during the Democrat rally at Chiang Mai University. Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva was giving a speech to explain why the party was boycotting the April 2 general election. Former Democrat leader and ex-premier Chuan Leekpai was also on stage during the demonstration. Intarat and Chaimontri Yothaboriban, president of the Association of Southerners in Chiang Mai, yesterday held a press conference at Intarat's house in Chiang Mai's Muang district. They said the incident on March 30 had a negative impact on not only the image of Chiang Mai residents but also on national harmony. He said that he and other Chiang Mai senators as well as Chaimontri did not want to see disharmony in the country. Therefore, he apologised to Democrat members and people in the South.
