No rest for city's finest

The metropolitan police chief yesterday cancelled all police leave during the Songkran holidays, despite the long hours the officers put in during the political crisis.

Police commissioner Lt-General Viroj Jantarangsi said a daily force of 5,000 officers was needed to set up 276 special checkpoints to test motorists for drink driving, catch speeding drivers and checks on offences that could lead to accidents.

Special surveillance units will monitor Sanam Luang and checks on vehicles for suspicious persons and firearms will be stepped up, he said.

Meanwhile, the Transport Company has organised a special services where 14 buses will collect workers at their factories and take them to their home provinces.

The buses are to be escorted by highway police and leave at 3pm on April 11. The service has received a cool response from factory workers.

From April 7 to 13, the Transport Company increased its services by 50 to 60 per cent or about 10,900 trips.
