Next govt should only be caretaker: lecturers

The government formed from Sunday's general election should be prevented from making major decisions, particularly in relation to mega-projects, a group of Chulalongkorn University lecturers said yesterday.
The lecturers, from the Faculty of Political Science, issued a statement supporting former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's decision to take a break from politics, but warned the new administration must play a distinct caretaker role. In issuing the statement after a closed-door meeting on Wednesday, the lecturers challenged the Election Commission to prove Sunday's election was free and fair. The group supported the examination of Thaksin's business dealings and whether he evaded tax when his family sold its 50-per-cent stake of telecommunications conglomerate Shin Corp early this year. The group also intends to propose suggestions for pending political reforms, the statement said.
