Teachers' anxious wait

The Teacher's Council of Thailand plans to urge the Education minister in the new government to rush licences to 370,000 teachers nationwide.

The council's secretary-general, Chakrapat Wata, said the licences must be issued to the teachers before June 12, as stated by the Teacher Act. The act, drawn up by the Education Reform Office, prescribes the restructuring of education-related agencies and requires that more than 705,000 teachers nationwide must be licensed.

However, only 670,000 teachers were qualified to receive government financial support for the Bt500 licence registration fee and so far only 300,000 teachers have received their licences.

Chakrapat said the incoming government will have to rush to approve the cost of the remaining 370,000 licences or, in order to be legally recognised after the June 12 deadline, the teachers will have to shoulder the fee themselves.
