Chatuchak trashed

About Bt10 million will be needed to restore Chatuchak Park after thousands of supporters of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra occupied it for almost a month, a senior official of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said yesterday.

Thirachai Thiensanchai, director of the environmental division, said the Caravan of the Poor caused damage to a section of the lawn and a shrubbery. Street lamps and public toilets that had been operating around-the-clock were also out of order, he said.

Thirachai said the BMA would have to hurry to restore the area because it is one of the main recreational parks in Bangkok.

The environmental division may require an emergency budget to cover the Bt10-million expenditure, and the BMA may request financial support from the central government, he said.

Thaksin's supporters in the Caravan of the Poor yesterday held a closing ceremony for their village at Chatuchak Park, which they established last month.
