Five Thais march into QF

[AMATEUR BOXING] Five Thais, including Athens bronze medallist Suriya Prasathinpimai, stormed into the quarter-finals of the 28th King's Cup amateur boxing tournament yesterday.
Local favourite Suban Pannon overpowered his Laotian rival, Sikham Vongpakhoune, winning a 24-5 decision in the light-flyweight class. The other Thais to advance were lightweight Tan Dansamak and welterweights Samas Payuha and Angkhan Chomphuphuang.Suban started off conservatively in the opening round, but ended up taking a seven-point lead. He emerged much more aggressively in the remaining rounds to take a convincing victory and move into the next round. "It was a good bout. I was a little bit tired towards the end but overall it was OK," said Suban. Suban will fight South Korean Kim Ju-seong, who yesterday beat China's Gao Liang, the silver medallist at the World Armed Forces Boxing Championships, 14-12, in today's quarter-finals. It was a different story in the bantamweight class, however, with both Thai boxers failing to make the next round. Kittisak Jittiteeranan lost to an RSC (referee stopped contest) decision to Russian Maksimov Iiya in the third round, while team-mate Itsarayut Jantraporn was beaten by Gu Yu of China 28-24. "It was a very close match. He is a very good boxer," said 20-year-old national champion Itsarayut. "I didn't know the score in the last round so I felt like I had to do better, but the result was as you see." In another match in the bantamweight class, defending champion Kim Won-guk of North Korea defeated Shoimov Orzaock of Uzbekistan 22-13. In the featherweight division, Thailand's Yuttapong Morthaison lost to Anthresh Lalit Lakha of India 22-13. Tan took the Thai team's third victory of the day with an RSC decision over Wu Chi Kit of Macao in the first round. He will meet Ranaweera Mudiyanselege of Sri Lanka, who went through on a wild card from the preliminary round, today in the last eight. In the welterweight category, Samas beat Krabaev Alibek of Uzbekistan in a close encounter 11-9, while Angkhan overcame Indian Dilbag Singh 24-9. Suriya recorded his team's fifth victory of the day with an RSC win over Japan's Tomonori Kikuchi in the first round. Six Thais, including Somjitr Jongjorhor, will feature in today's 20 scheduled bouts at The Mall Ngamwongwan's MCC Hall. Montreechai Lumyongsatian The Nation Nonthaburi
