Chuwit's last appeal

Chuwit Kamolvisit, former massage parlour boss and Chat Thai MP, yesterday appealed to the Supreme Court to cancel the Election Commission's ruling disqualifying him from standing in the April 19 senatorial elections.

The EC disqualified Chuwit on Tuesday, saying he had quit his MP status less than a year before applying for the Senate and thus was ineligible to contest for a senatorial seat. Chuwit was disqualified from standing as an MP on January 26 by the Constitution Court, which ruled he had not been a member of the Chat Thai Party for 90 days prior to the 2005 election.

Chuwit said as the Constitution Court had ruled against him standing as an MP, he should qualify for the Senate elections. He asked the Supreme Court to consider the EC's order. The court accepted Chuwit's petition and will begin inquiries into the case on Friday.
