No 'politics' in THAI selection

A THAI AIRWAYS worker presses for a new president to be appointed.
There will be no political intervention in the selection of a new president for Thai Airways International Plc (THAI), says acting president Somchainuk Engtrakul.

Somchainuk said this yesterday at company headquarters while meeting with hundreds of members of the THAI labour union, which has called for the company to appoint a new president as soon as possible.

He said a committee had been set up to select the best person. The committee has not chosen anyone from among four internal candidates who passed the first round.

However, union leader Somsak Srinual said his union wanted the company to select one of the internal candidates.

"We will return on April 12 if there is no further move," said Somsak.

Two directors, Olarn Chaipravat and Vichit Surapongchai, resigned from the company after pressure from the labour union, which accused them of having conflicts of interest. Somsak said neither director was qualified to remain on the board, because they held shares in or were in the same industry as Thai Airways or belonged to companies competing against the airline.

Olarn and Vichit had failed to notify shareholders on their appointment date that they

were directors of Shin Corp Plc, which is a shareholder of Thai AirAsia.

The union is considering urging the two directors to return the fees they were paid to the company.

The union also suggested the company not move its head office from Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road to Suvarnabhumi Airport, saying it would prove inconvenient for employees needing transport.

The union also asked why the government needed two airports - Don Muang and Suvarnabhumi - serving the same city.
