Thailand off to a poor start

[AMATEUR BOXING] Thailand A got off to a poor start on the opening day of the 28th King's Cup Amateur Boxing Championships yesterday, with featherweight Sailom Ardee losing his opening bout.
Sailom suffered an RSC (referee stopped contest) decision while trailing 26-6 in the third round to Athens Olympic silver medallist and defending champion Kim Song-guk of North Korea. Due to transportation problems, several teams failed to get to the venue on time and three of the seven matches scheduled were postponed. In other featherweight bouts, South Korean Jyo Suk-hwan defeated Sung Sung-an of Taiwan 26-12, Soltonov Bahaedjom of Uzbekiztan won with an RSC decision over Macau's Siang Long, and Duameria Mohammad of Syria beat Taiwan's Song Hao-long 23-14. General Thaweep Chantraroj, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand, said the association would do its best in hosting the tournament to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne. The tournament - which features 20 teams from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, North Korea, South Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Syria, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Thailand (A and B) - runs until Monday at The Mall Ngamwongwan's MCC Hall in Nonthaburi.
