Young drinkers bound for jail

Over one fifth of Thailand's young male population regularly consume large quantities of alcohol, a behaviour that contributes to criminal activity including gang rapes, a senior juvenile correctional official in Nakhon Ratchasima said yesterday.
The number of people aged between 11 and 19 nationwide classified as consumers of alcohol is 1.06 million, or around 21.23 per cent of that entire age group, said Chattraphong Kittiphorn.Almost all young inmates serving terms in detention facilities drank before committing their crimes, he added. - The Nation
