Man shot dead, one hurt in deep South

A government official was shot dead yesterday and another man was injured late on Monday as the violence continued in the deep South.

An employee of the Songkhla Highway Office, Sanan Krungmanee, 42, was shot dead yesterday while riding a motorcycle in Khok Pho district of Pattani.

Investigating officials said two gunmen approached Sanan from behind and opened fire with four rounds from a 9mm pistol. He later died at the hospital.

On Monday night, Rusdee Chewae, 20, was injured in a drive-by shooting while having dinner with his friends at a roadside restaurant in Yarang district of the same province.

Officials said an unknown number of suspected militants drove a pickup truck past the restaurant and opened fire on the crowd before speeding away. Rusdee was struck and rushed to a local hospital.

More than 1,200 people have lost their lives in near-daily violence since January 2004.
