Statue will be reassembled

The Brahma statue that was destroyed last month by a man with a history of mental illness will be reassembled using adhesive technology and then reinstalled at the Erawan Shrine, while an entirely new metal figure will be built as well, the panel in charge of the project said yesterday.

The mould being used for the new metal figure will be kept at the National Museum in case a similar incident occurs in the future, said Phaijit Rojjanawanich, the chairman of the Brahma Foundation.

The re-assembly, in which the shattered pieces are being put back together on a clay figure, is nearly finished and construction of the new metal figure is underway.

"The work on both Brahma statues will be completed by May 10 as scheduled," said Arak Sanghitakul, director-general of the Fine Arts Department.

Phaijit said a senior Brahmin priest had assured the committee that reassembling the shattered Brahma figures did not violate any religious rules.
