Home-building growth halts

The home-building market will show zero growth this year as a result of the political crisis, according to Home Builder Association secretary Sitthiporn Suwansut. He said new home orders had been delayed because most customers were concerned about how the current political problems will affect the economy.

The association has adjusted its estimate of market growth for this year from 15 per cent at Bt8.5 billion to zero growth at Bt7 billion, he said.

He added that home-building firms had also had to suspend investment for new construction equipment and raw materials because they are concerned about the economy if the political strife stretches into a marathon event.

"We don't know what will happen following the election, whether political problems will continue to affect our business, reducing it from last year," he said.

However, the association has not delayed its plans to hold the Home Builder Fair 2006 from August 16-20 at the Queen Sirikit Convention Centre, which will boost its sales in the second half of the year.

The association expects sales of Bt500 million from the event, Sitthiporn said. - The Nation
