Ex-volunteer shot dead in Pattani

A former community security volunteer was shot dead yesterday while two other men, including a village defence volunteer, were critically injured in the latest violence in the South.

Mayasi Usoh, 24, was gunned down by two gunmen in Pattani's Yarang district while riding his motorbike home. The gunmen rode up behind Mayasi on a motorcycle and fired three rounds into his head and body. He died at the scene, police said.

In Yala's Than To district, village defence volunteer Mayako Tayi, 37, was severely injured in an ambush.

Police said Mayako had been walking home from a village leader's house on Thursday night when an unknown number of suspected Muslim militants opened fire at him from roadside bushes.

Mayako was hit in the left leg and stomach and sent to hospital for treatment.

A house in the same district belonging to Arunee Srithep, 52, was set ablaze while she was away in another province. Police suspect Muslim militants were behind the attack.

In Narathiwat a 72-year-old man was critically injured in an attack while riding his motor-

cycle home from a religious ceremony.

Police said Doloh Muso had been shot at with a shotgun by gunmen hiding by the roadside in a forested area in Rangae district. He was struck in the left shoulder and taken to hospital for an operation to remove the bullets.

More than 1,100 people have lost their lives since violence broke out in the three southernmost provinces in January 2004. The near-daily shootings, bombings and arson attacks have crippled the local economy and daily life.
