PM mediates dispute

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra helped the wife of Natural Resources and Environment Minister Yongyuth Tiyapairat escape another possible jail term, a rival of the woman said yesterday.

Ratana Chongsutthanamanee, president of Chiang Rai's Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO), said she dropped a second charge against Salakchit Tiyapairat, Yongyuth's wife, following Thaksin's visit to Chiang Mai on Tuesday. She said the premier asked them to compromise and work together for the local people. They had reached an out-of-court agreement, Ratana said.

On March 16, Chiang Rai Provincial Court sentenced Salakchit to three years and nine months in jail for raising a false charge of vote-buying against Ratana during their battle for the post of PAO president in 2004.
