Surakiart threatens to sue Asda

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai yesterday threatened to file civil and criminal suits against Asda Jayanama if the former envoy continues to publicly attack him.
Surakiart accused the former Thai ambassador to the United Nations of defaming him and tarnishing his reputation. Asda's allegations had also damaged Thailand's international relations. Surakiart said his status as a public figure had made him reluctant to enter into a war of words with Asda. Lately, however, Asda's statements had become too personal, he said without elaborating. Surakiart dismissed suggestions that his fallout with Asda was personal in nature. The former diplomat has described Surakiart's candidacy to become the next UN secretary-general as a lost cause and an international embarrassment for Thailand. Surakiart, a former foreign minister, claims that up to 128 countries have promised to support his bid to replace Kofi Annan.
