Three hundred pro-government demonstrators gathered at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Political Science yesterday to protest an allegation that its dean said they were being paid to show support for the government.
The members of the Caravan of the Poor arrived in 29 pickup trucks and read a statement condemning Assoc Prof Amara Phongsaphich and deans at other universities for saying members of pro-government groups had been paid to demonstrate in support of the government. They also charged that Amara had been unfairly promoted to his position as faculty dean. In a telephone interview, Amara said he did not recall saying government supporters had been paid to demonstrate. The allegation could be derived from statement released by the Academic Network for Democracy on Friday calling on caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to end his "pay-for-support" tactics, he said. Wanchai Meechart, a deputy dean who received the demonstrators' petition on behalf of Amara, admitted that the dean, whose four-year term ends in September, had been appointed to the post even though he had received the fewest votes among the candidates.
