PM keeps faith in ailing Somkid

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak's hospitalisation yesterday should not lead to a disruption of government work, said Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
"He should be able to go home within two days," Thaksin told reporters when he visited Somkid in Bangkok's Ramathibodi Hospital. "It shouldn't be longer than two days. There were no complications. I will probably still have him look after economic issues." A government source said Somkid had checked into the hospital due to chest pains and would undergo a balloon agioplasty. Somkid oversees the ministries of Finance, Commerce and Industry, plus the Board of Investment and the National Economic and Social Development Fund. He is considered a possible replacement to fill in as prime minister should Thaksin step down from his post. There is a growing campaign calling for the PM to resign due to allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
